What is Earth Science?
Earth Science is the study of the solid Earth, how it works, and its history since formation 4.6 billion years ago. Earth Science is a great subject to study because understanding Earth history is very useful to help predict Earth’s future, and also to understand how to sustainably provide the resources we all need to live.
Is Earth Science the same thing as geoscience?
Yes, these are really just two names for the same thing.
Is Earth Science the same thing as geology, geophysics and physical geography?
Not the same, but related. Geology, geophysics and physical geography can all be considered a smaller part of the broader Earth Science subject, dealing with different aspects and using different methods. Geology focuses on the evolution of the Earth and its driving forces, from deep time when the planet formed, right through to modern day, while physical geography focuses on the most recent history related to the development of current landscapes and features. Geophysics emphasizes the use of physics to study the Earth, especially using remote sensing methods, for example based on earthquake records or measurements of the magnetic field.
How is Earth Science different from environmental science?
Earth Science focuses more on the solid Earth and its history and structure, while Environmental Science is focused on many aspects of the current environment, including water, atmosphere, landscapes and ecosystems. Both have an important part to play creating a more sustainable planet; Earth Science is particularly useful because understanding Earth history is very useful to help predict Earth’s future, and also to understand how to sustainably provide the resources we all need to live.
What qualifications do I need to study Earth Science at university?
You do not have to have studied geology or even geography at A-level to study Earth Science at university. Most UK universities ask for either one or two science A-levels, often including geography, psychology and other subjects, but the admission requirements vary quite a bit, as do the required grades, so use these pages to explore your options.
