University of Portsmouth

School of the Environment, Geography and Geosciences

We’re studying how our planet works, how it’s changing and what we can do about it.  Merging two departments, each with more than 50 years of history, the School’s skilled staff conduct impactful research and innovation that informs our relevant and engaging teaching. Our academic expertise covers areas including palaeontology, geology, geotechnical engineering, geography and environmental science, and we’re committed to teaching our students through practical lessons and fieldwork, so they can learn from our experts, first-hand.

  • We have strong connections with industry – you could do a placement year with companies such as Leap Environmental, Mott MacDonald, or Enitial, and get valuable work experience ahead of graduating.
  • Benefit from Portsmouth’s location on the south coast with field trips to nearby areas such as the Jurassic Coast and the Isle of Wight, and overseas trips to Europe and Hong Kong.
  • The University of Portsmouth holds a ‘Gold’ rating in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) – the Government’s way of measuring teaching excellence in Higher Education institutions.  Major factors in our rating include the superb academic and personal support we give our students, our excellent facilities, and the way we prepare students for successful careers after graduation.
