The School of Earth & Environment at the University of Leeds offers three exciting Earth Science degrees for study: Geology; Geophysics; and Geology-Geography. Our degrees will give you the chance to tap into your curiosity about the Earth and learn how to use the core sciences of chemistry, maths, physics, and biology, to understand our world and help solve the geotechnical and environmental problems we face. You can help create a better future!
Geology – newly revised and updated as of 2021, this course offers a broad education in the geosciences, from the processes that govern the Earth’s surface and interior, to the interactions between society and the Earth -all designed to enable you to become a key player in helping society move towards a greener and more sustainable future. You’ll study core disciplines including: nature and origins of Earth materials and the rock cycle; the evolution of life on Earth; plate tectonics and the structural deformation of rocks; natural hazards and climate change; geotechnics and geoengineering; geological mapping and fieldwork; geomodelling and programming; management of natural resources and development of clean geoenergy. There is a very strong emphasis on hands-on learning via practical work and field trips, making sure you are fully equipped with all the geoscience knowledge and technical skills necessary to understand and work in the modern world. For more info see: Geology BSc course info.
Geophysics – this numerically rigorous course draws on the expertise and active research of one of the UK’s largest teams of academic geophysicists. During your degree you’ll study modules covering all aspects of geophysics, such as exploration for natural resources, monitoring natural hazards, investigating the interior of the Earth, and measuring the movement and deformation of the Earth’s tectonic plates. Besides its broad range of geophysics content, this degree allows students to develop the advanced mathematical, numerical and computational skills that are highly valued by geophysics companies, research institutions, and financial and government departments For more info see: Geophysics BSc course info.
Geology and Geography – this is a split degree course delivered jointly by the School of Geography and School of Earth and Environment, combining the study of physical geography with geology, and draws on core elements from our Geology and Geography BSc courses. For more info see: Geology and Geography BSc course info.
Upgrade your degree – both our Geology and Geophysics courses offer the option for a year in industry placement, or to upgrade to a 4-year integrated undergraduate masters with a study year abroad at a partner university. Click the following links to find out more: MGeol and MGeophys.
